About Godfrey Turner

Godfrey Turner, born in London of New Zealand parents, grew up in Italy and Switzerland and spent his early working life in Vienna and Paris. In all those places he was exposed to the best of music performance and developed a great love and wide knowledge of the western canon of opera, orchestral and chamber music. Leaving Paris just ahead of the Nazi occupation in 1940 he served out the war in the New Zealand Army, and in 1947 migrated to Australia where he began a career in market research with Unilever. In 1955 he married Mary Killen and they continued to frequent both orchestral and chamber concerts as well as the developing opera in Sydney and during a couple of trips to Europe. In 1980 they moved to a country property, "Lallaween", near Orange and joined the growing push for more and better fine music in the region. He died in 1988, just as this push gathered momentum which led to the establishment of Orange Regional Conservatorium. In 1989 Mary established the Godfrey Turner Memorial Music Trust in his memory, "to raise the standards of appreciation and practice of music in Orange and surrounding region".
